One of the most illuminating lines in Joseph Heller’s best selling war novel, Catch-22, is snappily stated amidst the explosions of a WWII Luftwaffe bombing raid, “In chaos there is profit!” Off the enterprising officer went to harvest the spoils of war – boldly venturing into the bomb damage aflame with the outrages of battle, going forth, risking his life and limb not to win the war, but to turn a profit.  

Cancer is the most horrific internal battle waged in scorching struggles between healthy cells and the spreading spoils laid waste by this awful invading ailment. Everyday life with business as usual gets tossed into turmoil, but thankfully life goes on in medically modified ways; relationships get rubbed raw and rendered joyless, while the kindness of strangers and support from steadfast friends and family help ease the successful passage through this chaotic time.

The profit from my cancer chaos comes through a deeper awareness of my precarious energy flow – how dangerously low my energy can plunge and I’m still able to go on. My benefits are from learning to appreciate aspects of life so often taken for granted; coupled with embracing the simple joys of creature comforts and enjoying the wonders of nature – the assorted changing attitudes of human nature, and the purely natural kind that come with seasonal changes.

My saga isn’t cluttered with medical terms. I’m not a physician, thusly I write about my quest for a new nose in non-medical terms and in a storytelling style readers will discover to be an entertaining and informative read. This offering isn’t intended to provide medical advice, but rather to forewarn you of the unknown risks I assumed by delaying prescribed medical treatment at the first indication that things weren’t right with my nose. My delaying – which seemed like a good idea at the time – lost my nose to the surgeon’s knife and almost caused me to lose my life – that would have been a major bummer!!!

Several friends have remarked that only I could take a prolonged nose job – so to speak – and turn my cutting tales into a compelling saga rich with humor and spiked with telling insight. Indeed, ‘twas my ability to laugh heartily and often at my prolonged perilous plight that helped me to successfully survive the chaos of cancer and make the most of this horrendous ordeal. The most enduring benefit is rooted in sharing my bizarre experiences via The Nose Saga: Cancer Stinks!!!
